Colourful mural with a tram, a bakery queue and a big orange cat on a Lisbon street

the challenge

Fourteen metres of grocery

Mercearia do Canto is a corner shop that has been there for sixty years. They asked for a wall that told the neighbourhood story: the tram, the bakery queue, the cat that owns the street.

Nine days, two ladders, one sunburn. The mural is still there and the cat still sits in front of the part of the wall where I painted the cat.

my approach

Painting in public

Every morning started with a chalk grid, then big flat colour, then the details in the late afternoon shade. People stopped to chat, and a few of their stories ended up on the wall.

We sealed the mural with an anti graffiti coat, so the shop can wash it down and keep it bright for years.
