Gouache night illustration of a baker pulling bread from a glowing oven

the challenge

Who works while the city sleeps

Late Edition asked for twelve spot illustrations about night shifts: bakers, nurses, taxi drivers, the person who refills the vending machines. Each piece had to fit a narrow column and read in two seconds.

I drew every scene in gouache first, then cleaned the edges digitally so the grain survived print. The series ran across the whole issue and later became a small riso zine.

my approach

Twelve nights, twelve spots

Each spot started as a ten minute gouache thumbnail made the evening after an interview. I kept the palette to three colours per piece so the series would hold together across the issue.

The art director picked the strongest four for the cover rotation, and the whole set later became a small riso zine sold at the magazine launch.
